Domain health 2 min read

Check the identity before you scale the sender.

A pre-launch domain review for authentication, sending assets, security, reputation evidence, provider placement, and a defensible volume ramp.

Confirm ownership and purpose

Use a domain that honestly relates to the business and a From address recipients can verify. Separate streams when their risk differs, but avoid deceptive lookalikes. Record who controls DNS, the sending platform, recovery contacts, and what kind of mail the domain is meant to send.

A new domain has no positive history. Domain age alone is not a strategy; responsible acquisition, stable wanted volume, and clear identity create the history that matters.

Verify the production authentication path

Publish SPF, enable branded DKIM, and add DMARC reporting, then send through the real sequence tool. Inspect the return path, DKIM domain, DMARC result, and From address in delivered headers.

Check PTR and IP configuration when you control the infrastructure. On managed shared platforms, ask what the provider owns and which account-level evidence it supplies.

Look for compromise and reputation evidence

Review unexpected sends, credential access, bounce history, complaints, and relevant listings for the actual domain and IP path. Use Google Postmaster Tools or Microsoft SNDS only when the traffic and ownership make their data meaningful.

A clean blacklist scan is not a reputation certificate. Combine it with provider results and a placement baseline before increasing volume.

Test before the ramp

Send the representative cold-email message with its real links and From address to provider seeds. If authentication fails or important providers show broad Spam placement, fix that before adding volume.

Increase gradually to a defensible, relevant audience while watching complaints, bounces, provider responses, and placement. Warmup cannot make an irrelevant list safe.

Test the email you are about to send.

Keep the sender, template, and links unchanged. A comparable test gives you a baseline you can actually improve.
